This is a personal account provided to WasteAid through our eyewitness campaign.

Please describe the waste situation where you live.

I lived in rural area. In this area household wastes are not collected.  All the garbage is thrown in ponds. In municipality areas the waste is collected but is not recycled.

Its gives an awful look with bad smell.

Do people have to take their waste somewhere or is it collected and taken away from people’s homes? Is it transported by hand, cart or motor vehicle?

People throw their waste wherever they want, mainly in pond, riverside and backside of the house.

How do most people deal with their waste? Are they generally happy with the situation or not? Why?

In many places it stinks. Flies are too much irritating.

Although most of the people are not interested in this topic. They just close their nose and pass by the garbage. Some young people are enthusiastic and interested in this topic. But they don’t know what to do just like me.

Do you reduce your waste at home?

I  tried to carry my own bag instead of using plastic bag. I use some plastics bottles for plantation. Some plastic material can be sold like plastic chair, plastic bottles, toys, milk packets. I sold them to recycled.

Are you aware of problems caused by waste where you live?

In most of the places ponds, drains, rivers and fields are filled up with plastic bags. Used and throw pens are made of plastic and it also causes pollution. All food packagings are thrown anywhere. Until now its seems not a big issue. But in up coming years it will cause the huge problem.

Are there any good things happening with waste that you would like to share?

Some artist used plastic material for their creation. Small amount of waste only can be recycled. Not only in my place but also in Kolkata. This issue occur most of the parts of the West Bengal and you can notice all over places in India. But most of the educated people are not giving proper attention to this particular issue.

If you could make one change in how waste is managed, what would it be and why?

I want start a plastic recycling organisation, basically based on food packaging plastics, and polythene carry bags. Because those stuffs causes most of the pollution. And I will share my thoughts to my youngers. One day will come when most of the people will aware about plastic wastage, and they will not throw it. They will use it as raw material and make the world more beautiful.

Who do you think is responsible for improving the waste situation?

In my area there has no improvement. Each and every person of our society has responsibility to improve the situation.

Imagine the year is 2030 and we are looking back at how humans solved the waste challenge. How did we do it? What do you think made the biggest impact?

Awareness can make the biggest impact. And practical implementation of our thoughts will make the biggest impact. In south India, there is a road made by plastic wastes. Hopefully before 2030 we will see many roads like that.

Final comments:

I need help for starting recycling first time, practically and mentally in both ways. And pray for me to god.

Thank you Ratna for sharing your eyewitness account and joining the WasteAid movement.
