Cameroon
Cameroon is a large and diverse country, with a vast estuary opening out to the Atlantic Ocean. With very little waste collection taking place across the country, the rivers that meet the Douala Estuary are very polluted with waste, much of which could be recycled.
In particular, plastic waste is damaging fragile mangrove forests and causing further problems inland, where blocked drains create ideal breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes and flies.
In order to protect people’s health and the environment on which they depend, WasteAid’s programmatic focus is on building plastic collections and processing, initially in the city of Douala.
